These expressions, now popular among American teenagers, are, like the British spiffy, 'spiffing' and spiv, a derivation of the early-19th-century Brit-ish dialect term 'spiff', meaning dandy. Spiffed itself was heard in British speech until the 1930s and spiffed-up until the 1960s.
